Cernunnos the Stag is the Protector of Wild Animals. Firstly, this great mythological god is said to be able to influence the winds & rains that refresh and water the wood & field, valley and heath, keeping them verdant & life-engendering. Moreover, Cernunnos is the Guide of the Dead. He walks between the worlds.

In Gallo-Roman religion, Cernunnos is a deity depicting with antlers, seated cross-legged, and is associates with stags. In Gaulish the name Cernunnos has roots in the word karnon which means “horn” or “antler”. Believing to have originally been a Celtic deity, we can find over 50 examples associating with him. Specifically in the north-eastern region of what ancient Romans call Gaul. In addition, He associates with the Wiccan Horned God.

Lastly, some see the qualities of Cernunnos subsumed into the life of Saint Ciarán of Saighir, one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. As his hagiography goes, building his first tiny cell, his first disciple and monk is God tames a boar. Subsequently, this is following by a fox, a badger, a wolf and a stag.
